APPLYING FOR THE DOCTORAL DESIGNATION

Instructions

All documents must be sent together in one complete packet. Please allow up to two weeks from the date the documents arrive at our office for them to be reviewed. Once an application is reviewed, we will send an email confirming approval of the application or outlining the reasons that the application cannot be approved.

Required Documents

  1. Completed application for the doctoral designation; AND
    • Option A (Accredited Doctoral Program):
      • Official, unopened university transcript listing a doctoral degree conferred by an ABAI-accredited doctoral program.
    • Option B (Non-Accredited Doctoral Program):
      • Official, unopened university transcript listing a doctoral degree conferred by a qualifying institution; AND
      • A copy of the published dissertation abstract; AND ONE of the following sets of additional documentation:
        1. If qualifying via coursework, a copy of the official doctoral program of study showing all of the courses that were applied toward the requirements for the doctoral degree and syllabi for the four courses to demonstrate that they were entirely behavior-analytic in nature.
        2. If qualifying via advising, a letter from the faculty member who held the BCBA credential, on university letterhead, attesting to the formal supervisory relationship.
        3. If qualifying via publication, copies of the two peer-reviewed journal articles that are behavior analytic in nature. Please note that these articles may be published prior to, during, or after conferral of the doctoral degree.
    •  Option C (Postdoctoral Respecialization):
      • Official, unopened university transcript listing a doctoral degree conferred by a qualifying institution; AND
      • A letter of attestation from the BCBA who supervised the 1,800 hours of postdoctoral experience or fellowship. Please note that the 1,800 hours is in addition to the 1,500 hours of experience that may have been accumulated to sit for the BCBA exam.
      • Copies of the two peer-reviewed journal articles that are behavior analytic in nature. Please note that the articles must be a product of the post-doctoral training or work experience.

Fee Structure

An application fee of $100 is required for initial applications for the doctoral designation.

Maintenance fees for the designation are charged upon renewal or recertification. All doctoral designation fees will be in addition to the BCBA renewal and recertification fees. BCBA-Ds may choose to drop the BCBA-D designation and retain the BCBA at any renewal or recertification point.
